Social media for small businesses: Build buzz and grow – Part 1

So you’ve set up a few social media accounts for your business. Now it’s time to let them grow and get the buzz going, but how? Let your business fuse with the social media mechanisms. Here are some hacks on the way.

1. Be found

There’s no sense in having a beautiful Facebook page, awesome pics on Instagram and genius Tweets if no one notices. Make sure people know where to find you. And how to tag your business in their posts. Don’t forget your preferred hashtags! Add your essential social info to your business cards, paint it on your walls and maybe you could even have a landing page with your social feeds when guests log on to your free WiFi?

2. Make friends with the PR people

Practically every PR agency arranges breakfast press meetings, lunch launches or after work seminars, and most often they don’t have adequate venues in-house. That’s where you come in. Contact a few agencies and tell them you can have your premises available on short notice. Most often they’ll pay well, and – most importantly – you’ll get to showcase your business to the invited journalists, bloggers and editors. Ask that your social media info is included in the press material.

3. Stick out

Simply posting opening hours and today’s menu won’t break the internet. Try to find unique themes and ideas to stick to. Invent silly competitions, post your playlists and ask for music tips, bake a ridiculous cake and tell people to name it or start a retro music video day once a week.

4. Flirt with the social media elite

Even Twitter nerds occasionally want to meet each other AFK, IRL. You can be proactive here: Get in touch with some of the influencers and tell them you can host their next tweetup. Offer to give them a really good price if they mention you in their channels. Some of them might even be up for some free coffee in a more long-term relationship.
