How to get started with video marketing

Have you noticed the shift on your social media timeline? We’re crazy about videos these days. In fact, it is estimated that 75 percent of all mobile traffic will be video-related in 2020. You could and should get on board this wave. Here are six things to think about before getting started.

1. Just try it out

It’s easy to get scared off by obstacles like costs and time. Start low-key and post funny stuff on Instagram, Facebook or Snapchat using your smartphone. You’ll quite soon get an idea if video is something you’ll want to continue pursuing.

2. Set a budget

If you believe that video material could be a key element in your marketing mix, you need to be aware of the fact that high-quality video material takes a lot of time and money. Team up with a local video wiz and create a few pilot projects. Set up a timeline and decide how much money you’re willing to spend.

3. Be fast and to the point

A video that doesn’t engage within the first few seconds will be ignored. You have to address your key points immediately and keep the video length to an absolute minimum.

4. Use graphics and text

Most people will likely view your stuff on the go and without sound, so you need to make sure the video works with visuals only. Learn from some of the best on Facebook, like NowThis, AJ+, Buzzfeed and many others. Editing is key here, so find someone who’s really good at it.

5. Be engaging

Don’t even think of video as a marketing channel but as a way of engaging with your customers. Be funny, inspiring or interesting, but always produce your material with the intention that your viewers should learn something – or at least feel something after watching.

6. Go viral

Easier said than done, but distributing your material is key to success. Experiment with creating sponsored posts on Facebook, as it’s still quite affordable. Ask your friends, family members and co-workers politely to help you spread the word.
